QUICK AND SIMPLE TIPS
1. Stop at your locker every two or three classes, don't load up that book bag and carry your life around with you. Look at your schedule for classes that are close together. Think it out. If you are sincere and prepared for each class, I don't think the teacher will mind if you are a few seconds late to class.
2. Designate a portion of your "lower" locker for books going home. Divide it with a simple piece of cardboard about half the height of the locker. With each visit to your locker, simply put the books needed for homework in the section of your locker that you designated as your "books going home" section. (Be sure that you note all assignments in your agenda book.)
3. Once at home, take a brief break: Eat a healthy snack, play with the dog, listen to 15-20 minutes of your favorite music or just relax. But, plan to start homework at a specific time, such as 3:30 p.m., the latest.
4. Select the right spot to study. For example, if Mom is home and starts supper at 3:30, plan to study or do homework at the kitchen counter/table, so she can help keep you on task and support your effort to study. (Dad can do the same thing.)
5. Don't get up to snack or to go to the bathroom too often, it will break your study skill and it is a distraction to your mind.
6. Ask your parent to HELP you to get in the habit of studying at a regular time. I'm sure they would be pleased to help.
7. Start with the subject you know you can finish, such as Math. But, don't rush. Be proud of the results of your efforts. Then, move on to the next subject, until mom calls a "time-out" for supper. Yeah!
8. When you have a reading task, seek out a quiet spot away from the hustle and bustle of family life, such as your room. However, try to avoid taking a nap. Your homework must be a priority. Just find the right mix and read as long as you can.
9. Check off each assignment in your agenda book as you do it. You'll be proud of the effort you are making. Each check mark means success!
10. Don't watch ANY television Monday through Thursday. Television should start Friday, after the weekend homework is complete. Just think how good it will feel to watch television Saturday and Sunday without the feeling of guilt because of homework or studying that has yet to be completed. Not to mention you can come into school on Monday, without that feeling of dread because you are prepared for classes.
11. Go to your bedroom by 8:00 p.m. to finish up any reading tasks, but be prepared to shut off the light by 9:00 p.m. You need your rest, in addition to a healthy diet.
That's all for now Kids, I'll try to add on from time to time. If you have any suggestions for success, be sure to stop by the health office and share them with me. Also feel free to just come in to say hello!
