Health education is designed to help students to learn health skills and
form good health habits.
In May 2005, Mrs. Armin, Mrs. Canavan, Mr. Carroll,
and Mrs. Shillieto were awarded a $5000.00 grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield
of Massachusetts to implement their new "Jump Up and Go! Healthy Choices"
program. The grant gives Tantasqua's Physical Education and Health
teachers an opportunity to improve the health of our students and the nutrition
and physical activity environment of the school.
Health topics in grade seven include nutrition, consumer health, assessing
risk, substance abuse prevention, conflict resolution, and body systems.
Activities include preparing healthy snacks, reading labels, identifying
deceptive advertising, assessing risk-taking behaviors and making responsible
decisions, accessing reliable health information, researching and presenting
information in class-discussions, and participating in community service
projects.
In grade eight, the focus is on health assessment, stress management, exercise
and fitness, substance abuse prevention, family life, nutrition, body systems,
and human sexuality (abstinence and diseases). Students design health
goals and plans, create a stress management portfolios, design individual
fitness plans, participate in nutritious cooking activities, research and
present information on STD's, and participate in community service activities. |
