Information Skills Information skills are taught within the context of the school's curriculum. In other words, they are taught in conjunction with teacher generated assignments in the various subject areas. Each subject area is urged to identify appropriate information skills to integrate with its curriculum. To facilitate integration of information skills with curriculum, Tantasqua has adopted the Big6 process of effectively using information. While conducting research for projects, students use the Big6 to identify, synthesize, and evaluate information that is appropriate for the task at hand. Students use information from a variety of formats, including traditional print materials, audiovisual and computer software, and online resources. Teachers are welcome to collaborate with the library media specialist to design lessons that incorporate information skills. It is recommended that at least 10% of your assessment address how well students utilize these skills. The library media specialist is always willing to help your students master information skills in the following ways: Full lessons Tantasqua's information skills program begins at grade 7 in the junior high. There is a series of benchmarks that students should complete by the time that they graduate from high school. At Tantasqu Regional High School, all 9th grade students receive a thorough review of information skills as part a research paper assignment. Information skills are also integrated with many other assignments in the high school curriculum. In particular, there is an emphasis on integrating information skills with writing skills. Therefore, many courses require research papers that reinforce the use of information skills. Another area of emphasis is the use and evalution of online resources, including databases.
