Students are required to read one book from the appropriate list.
Students may choose to regularly read about current events from a variety of sources in lieu of reading a book. Students who select the current events alternative must keep a journal in which they not only summarize and discuss the significance of each article, but also appropriately cite (MLA style) them. Journals should contain a minimum of fifty entries.
In September, students will be given a choice of general prompts related to their book or current events to which they must respond in a thoughtful and thorough essay. Current events journals will be collected on the day the essay is administered. A committee of teachers will assess the essays and journals. Academic credit will be awarded to deserving students.
