FOURTH GRADE OVERVIEW

Reading

The fourth grade generally uses a literature based program to teach reading. We use literature from a variety of genres. This approach promotes the development of critical thinking and questioning skills. It also encourages an appreciation of literature. Each child is expected to have a SSR (Sustained Silent Reading) book daily at school.

Spelling

Spelling lessons are presented each week and spelling tests are given weekly. The application of correct spelling is stressed throughout the curriculum.

Language

The fourth grade uses a process approach to writing, incorporating the children's writing to teach grammar skills when appropriate. Writing is also integrated throughout the curriculum.

Communication

Handwriting is formally taught once a week. The student is encouraged to use cursive handwriting throughout the curriculum. Written and oral communication should be presented clearly by the student. Students must respect each others' oral and written assignments.

Portfolios

The fourth grade maintains a Language Arts Portfolio for each child as an alternative measure of assessment. This portfolio includes quarterly samples of each child's work in Language Arts. Parents are encouraged to view their child's portfolio during parent conference times.

Mathematics

The fourth grade incorporates the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Standards into the math curriculum. Manipulatives are used to introduce and reinforce math concepts. The curriculum includes place value, estimation, numeration, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, geometry, measurement, fractions and decimals, as well as the collection, organization, and use of data. Problem solving strategies are included at every level of instruction. Grade 4 uses Heath's Mathematics Connections Level 4.

Social Studies The fourth grade curriculum is an overview of the family, culture, daily life, and effects of geography, economics, and civics of the United States. In addition, we will also be studying selected early, ancient, and pre-modern civilizations such as: Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, Greece, and the feudal era.

Science

The science program includes six to eight units which will be selected by the teacher for study during the year. Each unit includes investigations which actively involve the students in the study of science. Our units involve cycles such as: the water cycle, the oxygen cycle, and the life cycle of plants and animals. Grade 4 uses HBJ's Science Level 4. The Health Curriculum is integrated across the curriculum throughout the year.

Homework

Students are given a Homework Log at the beginning of each week. Parents are expected to check that their child's assignments are completed and are asked to please sign the log each evening. Class assignments that are not completed during the school day should automatically be finished for homework. The study of spelling is required each week. Other nightly assignments will be recorded by the student in the proper space on the Homework Log.

Computer Technology

The students are involved in a computer class for 40 minutes per week. They learn typing, research, and writing skills. A variety of programs are utilized to enhance class instruction. The students apply their computer lab knowledge within the classroom setting.
