The curriculum and activities in the second grade classrooms correlate with and are in compliance with the Massachusetts State Frameworks and the Curriculum guidelines set up by School Union #61.

Language Arts In Language Arts, we use a reading basal program supplemented with literature, Doing Words which lead into process writing, read aloud, silent reading, poetry and chants, diaries and/or journals, and a formal handwriting program. Formal spelling is directly taken from the grade 2 spelling list (Lessons 1-30) found in the Union #61 English Language Arts Curriculum Guide. Many of these words represent high frequency words met in our daily lives. Inventive spelling is encouraged in creative writing, and personalized dictionaries are utilized in our process writing program.

Mathematics The second grade math program blends practice sheets with manipulatives. It consists of hand-on objects for introduction and use during lessons, and blends written practice for evaluation and independence. Co-operative learning and problem solving are encouraged in accordance with the National Council of Teachers of Math (NCTM) standards.

History and Social Sciences In compliance with the Massachusetts History and Social Sciences Curriculum, the second grade program focuses upon the study of life in the early Americas before the arrival of European settlers. Emphasis is placed upon Native American cultures up to 1620. Some early European explorers are introduced. Common strands throughout the program are history, geography, economics, and civics and government. Much of the material we use is often related to other subjects and is taught in correlation with these subjects. The very important life skills of respect, responsibility and citizenship are emphasized. Students realize that individual conduct makes life better for everyone and learn about people whose contributions deserve to be admired.

Science and Technology The Science and Technology curriculum is designed to foster personal fulfillment and excitement while building scientific knowledge, critical thinking, problem solving and research related skills. Students work cooperatively as well as independently. We provide developmentally appropriate experiences, and help students develop scientific literacy by using observations, questions, predictions and interpreting findings in discussions, drawings, graphs and writings. Some topics included in Grade 2 are: light and shadows, properties of water, life cycles, weather and water cycles, problem solving and computer technology.

Homework Homework is an important part of our second grade curriculum. The purpose of any homework at this grade level is to instill a sense of responsibility and independence, and to reinforce skills previously taught and worked upon within the classroom.

Student Progress Second grade uses a number of reporting tools to assess students throughout the year. The purpose of each tool is to assist the teacher in her/his future planning for each student, as well as a means of communicating with parents about their child's education.
Some of the assessment tools we use are:

  1. Reading and math folders
  2. Writing portfolios
  3. Individual portfolios
  4. Quarterly reports
  5. Report cards
  6. Parent letters
  7. Writing Assessment
  8. Spelling and math tests
  9. Handwriting samples
